Katy Has Six High Schools Rated 8+: The Two 9/10 Schools Many Buyers Miss

As of October 15, 2026, I found six public schools serving high-school grades in the Katy and commonly compared Fulshear home-search area with a current GreatSchools rating of 8 or higher. Only four are tied directly to a residential attendance zone; the other two are lesser-known 9/10 public charter schools where buying nearby does not create automatic admission.

The costly mistake is not missing one school. It is buying a home and learning after contract that “nearby” never meant “assigned.”

This is a screening list, not a school ranking

The 1–10 scores in this article are the GreatSchools ratings displayed on the publication date. GreatSchools says ratings can change as new data becomes available and should be a starting point alongside school visits, conversations, programs, and the needs of the student.

The search scope covers Katy and the Fulshear areas buyers commonly compare with Katy, including public district and public charter campuses that serve high-school grades. A mailing city, independent school district, and attendance zone are different layers. “Six schools” describes this dated search—not a permanent official count.

The four familiar names: the exact home address matters

If the goal is a Katy ISD high school currently rated 8 or higher, these are the four address-zoned campuses in this search. Neighborhood names are useful directions, not proof of assignment.

1. Seven Lakes High School|Current rating: 9/10

Buyers often search Seven Meadows, Grand Lakes, and portions of western Cinco Ranch and Silver Ranch when considering Seven Lakes. The trap is treating a large master-planned community as one attendance zone.

Different sections can have different high-school assignments. A listing that says “near Seven Lakes” does not establish that the exact address is currently assigned there.

2. Obra D. Tompkins High School|Current rating: 9/10

Pine Mill Ranch, Churchill Farms, and portions of southwestern and western Cinco Ranch frequently appear in Tompkins searches. Buyers should check both the current assignment and any proposal affecting a later school year.

Katy ISD’s proposed 2027–28 boundary modification would move Land Use Zone 61E from Cinco Ranch High School to Tompkins High School. If approved, it would take effect in August 2027. It remains a proposal and should not be described as an adopted change.

3. Jordan High School|Current rating: 9/10

Jordan often comes up for buyers looking in western Katy and parts of Fulshear, including portions of Cross Creek Ranch and nearby development.

A Fulshear mailing address does not automatically mean Lamar CISD, and a Katy mailing address does not establish Katy ISD or a particular campus. The district and the address-based boundary control the assignment.

4. Cinco Ranch High School|Current rating: 8/10

Portions of earlier Cinco Ranch villages, Falcon Ranch, and the Kelliwood area are commonly included in a Cinco Ranch High search. But “in Cinco Ranch” is not an enrollment document.

Before an offer, run the complete street address through the official district tool instead of relying on the subdivision name, ZIP code, or a real-estate portal’s school field.

The list is not over: two more schools are rated 9/10, and many buyers have never heard of them

These schools are easy to miss when a search starts with “school-zone homes.” Their ratings are not lower. Their admission model is different: neither uses a conventional residential attendance zone.

5. Harmony School of Innovation – Katy|Current rating: 9/10

Harmony is a public charter school. Its GreatSchools profile currently shows about 876 students in grades 8–12, a different scale and model from Katy ISD’s large comprehensive high schools.

Harmony accepts open-enrollment applications. When eligible applications exceed available seats, the school uses a lottery and waiting list. Buying in a supposedly “zoned neighborhood” is neither required nor a path to automatic admission.

6. Calvin Nelms High School|Current rating: 9/10

Calvin Nelms is the lesser-known name on the list. GreatSchools currently identifies it as a public charter high school with about 183 students in grades 9–12. The same 9/10 label does not make its campus size, course environment, or admission model equivalent to a large district high school.

The school’s published policy lists the districts from which students may apply. New-student applications for fall are generally accepted February 1 through March 31; if eligible applicants exceed open seats, an April lottery determines offers and the waiting-list order. There is no subdivision that provides automatic admission.

Why the same score creates two completely different homebuying decisions

  • Seven Lakes, Tompkins, Jordan, and Cinco Ranch are Katy ISD schools where regular assignment depends on the exact address, school year, and current boundary.
  • Harmony and Calvin Nelms are public charter schools with separate application policies; proximity does not replace an application or guarantee a seat.
  • A third-party score does not make campus size, courses, activities, transportation, or individual student fit equivalent.

Verify school information in this order before buying

English workflow for checking an exact address, official district locator, grade bands, school year and rezoning proposals

The graphic above shows the sequence I recommend. When school information affects the offer, do not verify it only once.

  1. At the start of the search, use ratings and household priorities to narrow options without labeling an entire subdivision.
  2. Before an offer, enter the complete address in Katy ISD’s official Find My School tool and record elementary, junior high, high school, and the applicable school year.
  3. Review public rezoning proposals, new-campus plans, and attendance-boundary modifications.
  4. After contract and before enrollment, reconfirm with the district or school. For charter options, check eligibility, application dates, lottery rules, and waiting lists.

Why I would not buy a home based only on an “8 or higher” filter

A rating can narrow the list, but it cannot answer every family’s question. A buyer with an elementary-age student should review the full elementary-to-high-school path. A student who needs a particular course, activity, or support should verify what the campus offers and whether a separate application applies.

The house still has to work. Price, property tax, insurance, age, foundation, roof, HVAC, commute, and resale competition belong in the same decision. Paying for one number while accepting an unsustainable budget or major maintenance risk may not be the better choice.

Frequently asked questions

Are GreatSchools ratings official district rankings?

No. They are third-party ratings created from public data and can change as data and methodology change. They are a screening tool, not an official ranking, permanent conclusion, or admission guarantee.

Does every home in one subdivision feed the same high school?

Not necessarily. Large communities can cross attendance boundaries, and separate sections—even nearby streets—may have different assignments. Verify the exact address and school year.

Does living near Harmony or Calvin Nelms improve admission odds?

Do not assume that. Both are public charter schools governed by their own admissions policies. Eligibility, available seats, lottery procedures, and waitlists should be confirmed for the applicable year.

Is today’s assigned school guaranteed several years from now?

No. Districts may redraw boundaries because of new campuses, capacity, and enrollment changes. Review public proposals and reconfirm at each important decision point.
